Predicting Beauty Trends 2023

Let’s be honest, it can be tricky to keep up with trends, especially when it comes to beauty trends. Are we in the era of cat eyeliner and a bold lip, no makeup makeup, or a bold Euphoria eye? At the end of the day, I truly believe trends should be taken with a grain of salt. With that, they can be fun to play with and, often, encourage us to try something new. With January already coming to a close, I have started to take note of what I think will lead the pack in beauty trends for the remainder of 2023. As a Derm PA, who is also skincare, hair, makeup, and mani obsessed, l have listed all of my top predictions below.

Predicting Beauty Trends 2023

In 2022, the word started spreading about the importance of our skin barriers. I anticipate that this theme will only grow in 2023. For anybody not familiar with the term skin barrier, let’s discuss where and what it is first. Most of us think of three layers when we think of the skin: the epidermis, dermis, and the subcutaneous layer. While this is true, each layer also has its own sublayers. At the very top of the epidermis, you’ll fine the skin’s protective barrier (also known as stratum corneum).

This layer helps protect your body from external stressors, retains water to keep your skin hydrated, and transports vital nutrients to our skin. When our skin barrier is impaired, our skin will be more likely to become “damaged,” and will likely appear more dull and dehydrated. So how can we avoid a weak skin barrier? Avoid things like smoking, UV radiation, and over-exfoliating. On the flip side, we can strengthen our skin barrier by including products that will restore essential skin lipids, like ceramides, natural cholesterol, and fatty acids. A few of my favorite products that I love for skin barrier strengthening are Skinfix Barrier+ Triple Lipid Peptide Cream and the Dr Jart Ceramidin Skin Barrier Moisturizing Cream.

Face Makeup

Next up on my prediction list is less “face makeup”. Ever since the world saw Hailey Bieber apply sunscreen, concealer, blush, and a full eye on TikTok, the no foundation team earned a few points. With skincare being more of our main focus, it seems like we are all embracing more and more of the “no makeup” look. My theory is we are all a little traumatized from the early 2000’s when so many of us (myself included) prioritized layering foundation, in effort to cover up blemishes and uneven skin tone. Now more than ever, people are trying to nail down their skin routine and leave the foundation minimal at most!

Goodbye Full Glam

On a similar note, my next 2023 beauty prediction is saying bon voyage to full glam. I want to start by saying if you love a full glam look, I think that’s amazing and you do you! With that, it does seem like 2023 is encouraging a shift to a cleaner and simpler look. Whether it’s beauty gurus on tiktok, or celebrities’ makeup routine on Vogue’s youtube, we are continuously seeing an emphasis on glowing skin, creamy blush, and full natural brows. One of the reasons I am obsessed with this trend, and secretly hope it’s here to stay, is that while makeup looks can come and go, our natural features are forever (well most of the time).

Clean Products

For my next beauty prediction, I think the wave of “clean” products has passed. Remember in 2016 when everyone was obsessed with coconut oil as their only skin/hair/sunscreen product? I cannot fathom we are going back. There is more and more information coming out on “what” clean products are. We are quickly realizing that  “clean” is not a regulated term by any reputable source and many of the ingredients banned by clean brands are safe and there is no scientific evidence of harm to humans. My hope is that the new focus is on clinical and actual data behind the claims. This will ideally persuade consumers to find the ingredients that are effective and work for them! Finally, and most importantly (in my opinion), I predict 2023 will encourage us to keep doing whatever the heck we want! Find the makeup, nail, hair, and skin steps that make you feel fulfilled and confident. I think we all have been stuck buying products because we think we “should.” I hope this is the year we find what works for us and only try the trends we want to try.
