Tips to Get Thicker Hair
I am fairly confident that most of us, at some point in time, have wished for thicker and more voluminous hair. While I was not born blessed with thick and long hair, I can proudly say, my hair is now where I always hoped it would be. How? I am going to lay out all the steps, tips and products I use to get my fullest hair.
Scalp Health for Optimal Hair Growth
Are you even surprised that we are starting with the scalp? In simplest terms, your scalp is where hair growth begins, and if it’s not healthy, your hair won’t be either. Think of it like soil— well-maintained soil leads to strong plants. The same applies to hair follicles.
This might be the easiest tip you can do (it’s also free). Studies show that scalp massage increases blood flow to hair follicles, which can stimulate hair growth and improve hair thickness over time. I, personally, like to use a scalp massager, but you can also easily use your fingertips! Just gently massage your scalp for 3–5 minutes daily. It also just feels incredible, so why not?
Remove Buildup
Styling products, dead skin, oil, and dry shampoo are all bound to build up, clogging hair follicles. This is potentially slowing hair growth! I try to use a scalp scrub every 2-3 washes, and I swear by a detox shampoo! The one I use is pretty gentle, so I use it as my first wash for every cleanse day.
This is a scalp spray I have started incorporating in the last few years where I notice my hair looks thinner. I typically spray it at night, before a scalp massage. It includes ingredients like peptides and adaptogens.
2. Supplements & Nutrition
Supplements:
Nutrafol: If you read my blog on my supplement cabinet, you already know where I am going with this one! Nutrafol is one of the few hair supplements that has been backed by several clinical studios, to combat hair thinning. It takes a multi-targeted approach to address any underlying factors that could be causing hair thinning. I take the Women’s Supplement regularly, but they also have a great postpartum one for any new mommas out there. You can use this link for $50 off your first order!
Collagen Peptides: I don’t know if this one falls under the category of “supplement,” but I have been experimenting with incorporating hydrolyzed collagen peptides into my routine. Dr. Anthony Youn was on my podcast recently where he discussed the growing body of research supporting collagen supplementation. Since collagen makes up 70% of the dermis (the layer of skin where hair follicles are rooted), maintaining healthy collagen levels supports stronger, more resilient follicles. Additionally, collagen provides proline and glycine—two amino acids essential for keratin production, which is the structural protein of hair. Studies have even used skin biopsies months after collagen supplementation and found that participants had higher collagen levels in their skin, confirming its ability to stimulate collagen synthesis at a cellular level. While most people associate collagen with skin health and “anti-aging”, it also plays a key role in hair strength, scalp elasticity, and hydration.
Pro Tip: When looking for a collagen supplement, make sure it’s hydrolyzed collagen peptides to ensure proper absorption. You can mix it into coffee, smoothies, or tea daily as an easy way to incorporate it into your routine.
Nutrition: I did want to briefly touch on this. Like our skin, nutrition absolutely plays a part in our hair growth/density. If you think of it, hair is made of keratin, a protein, meaning what you eat can directly affect hair structure, strength, and growth. This part probably won’t come as a surprise, but prioritize protein, omega 3s, iron and biotin. I can do a whole blog or podcast episode on how I eat for skin & hair health, but I just wanted to at least mention it here!
3. CurrentBody LED Hair Growth Helmet:
I figured I would finish with one of the bigger investments (but in my opinion, very worth it)! An LED Hair Growth Helmet is designed to enhance circulation, reduce inflammation, and reactivate dormant follicles.
Now these are nice claims, but it's a big investment, so I am sure you are wondering HOW it works. Red light therapy works by stimulating hair follicles at a cellular level, essentially re-energizing them to support hair growth. The light penetrates the scalp and increases blood circulation, delivering more oxygen and nutrients to the follicles—both of which are essential for keeping hair in its growth phase. It also reduces inflammation, which can contribute to excessive thinning/shedding or slowed growth. Over time, with consistent use, this process helps prolong the growth phase, meaning less hair falls out and more new, (ideally stronger) hair grows in.
My husband and I try to use it 3-4 times a week, and we love it! My favorites are the ones from CurrentBody (you can use the code “CBAMY” for a discount) and iRestore!
Alright, I think that wraps up my tips for thicker hair! Let me know which tips you try! If you do try them, I recommend doing progress photos! Also, want to level up your haircare routine? I have a full haircare guide that has a hair quiz, product suggestions, and sample routine.
