Collagen Building Routine

Without a doubt, one of the biggest hype words I have heard nonstop in the beauty and skin world over the last few years, is COLLAGEN. For anybody not familiar, collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies. It can be found in our skin, muscles, digestive system, muscles, bones and more! In regards to our skin, think of collagen as what provides that plump, bouncy and youthful look. Unfortunately, collagen production starts to decline during our 20’s! Here are the skincare steps I take in the morning to encourage greater skin firmness, elasticity, and plumpness! Remember there is no one product that’s a slam dunk but this AM routine helps me on my way. Let me know if you want my PM collagen building routine!

Step 1: Start with a gentle cleanser. A gentle cleanser that you love, like this one from Skinfix, will help remove any dirt and oil left on the skin, without stripping necessary lipids from the skin. While cleansing in the morning is not always necessary, it is important to cleanse at night!

Step 2: If you have read my blog post on Current Body’s LED Masks, you probably know how much I use it. I love using this as a second step in my routine about 3 times a week (for only 10 minutes)! The brands own study has shown 95% of users revealed firmer, more youthful appearing skin and 35% less wrinkles in a month’s time. I, personally, have been using it consistently for a few months now and have truly noticed the difference. Red and near infrared light are ways we can increase collagen from home. If you are looking for an overall youthful glow to your skin, I highly recommend giving the LED Mask a try!

Step 3: If you have been following me for a while, you have likely heard me say that Vitamin C is essential in my everyday routine. Vitamin C has proven to build collagen production over time, improve fine lines and wrinkles, brighten the skin, and help fight free radicals. I love to use Vitamin C in the form of a serum as a third step every single day.

Step 4: Since I am such a Vitamin C fan-girl, I gravitate to it in just about any form! This Origins Ginzing Vitamin C eye cream is one of my absolute obsessions. With Vitamin C and Niacinamide, I know this eye cream is getting to work on the quality of my skin while the subtle pigments help to reflect light and immediately brighten the undereye.

Step 5: No skincare routine is complete without a moisturizer that fits your skin’s needs. A good moisturizer will help to minimize the appearance of  fine lines and wrinkles and mitigate any stripped, tight feeling. A moisturizer should have 3 components to effectively moisturize AND hydrate: humectants, emollients and occlusives! Here are some favorites.

Step 6: Alright, who can guess my final step?? If you know me, you probably already know the answer. My final step to a collagen building skin routine (and absolute must-have, no exception step) is SUNSCREEN. When applying sunscreen, make sure you are applying ¼ to ½ teaspoon to make sure the skin is truly protected! Beyond any other factor, UV exposure breaks down collagen in the skin. At the end of the day, sunscreen is, without a doubt, the most important step in your AM skin routine.
