Double Cleanse 101
If you’ve been in the skincare world for a minute, you’ve probably heard of double cleansing. It’s been a staple in K-beauty routines and something dermatologists have recommended for years, but it didn’t become a US trend until somewhat recently. But let me tell you, this is one of those skincare “trends,” that, dare I say, is my favorite. Let’s call this blog an ode to my love for double cleansing. We will discuss who should do it, why it works, and how to do it the right way.
What Is it?
Probably self explanatory, but let’s break it down: double cleansing is the process of washing your face twice. Typically (but not always), it involves using two different types of cleansers to remove everything from your skin.
Step 1: Start with an oil-based cleanser, cleansing balm, or micellar water to break down makeup, sunscreen, and excess oil. Oil attracts oil, allowing this first cleanse to dissolve sebum, waterproof sunscreen, and stubborn cosmetics without over-drying the skin.
Step 2: Follow up with a water-based or gentle cleanser to actually “cleanse” your skin. This ensures the skin is thoroughly cleansed without stripping its natural barrier.
The Science Behind It
At its core, double cleansing works because different types of debris require different removal techniques. Like I mentioned, oil-based variables, such as makeup, sebum, and SPF, are best broken down by oils and emulsifiers found in cleansing balms or oils. Water-based cleansers then follow up to remove things like sweat, pollution, and dead skin cells.
If you read my blog on how to choose a cleanser, you would know how powerful proper cleansing can be. When done right, cleansing can prevent acne, premature aging, and irritation. A 2017 study found that inadequate cleansing can lead to the accumulation of pollutants on the skin, increasing oxidative stress and accelerating skin aging. Beyond just removing dirt, spf, makeup, etc. double cleansing can also improve the efficacy of active skincare ingredients by allowing deeper penetration into the skin.
Who Should Double Cleanse?
I am going to be honest, in my opinion, everyone should double cleanse. I find it to be the only way to remove everything. Basically, if you’re wearing enough spf (WHICH I HOPE YOU ALL ARE), double cleansing is a must.
With that in mind, I will focus this section on who should absolutely/without a doubt/100% double cleanse. Let’s start with the obvious one: makeup wearers. If you wear makeup, double cleansing is going to ensure every last bit is gone before applying your other skincare. I know I already mentioned this, but I would include sunscreen in this category as well.
I would also say that if you’re in a city environment, that is reason enough to double cleanse at night. Pollution and environmental debris can build up on the skin throughout the day. Since air pollution can penetrate the skin barrier, this will contribute to inflammation, pigmentation, and premature aging. Solution = Double Cleanse
How To Do It, Step-By-Step?
If you’re ready to add double cleansing to your routine, here’s how to do it the right way:
Step 1: Choose Oil-Based Cleanser, Balm or Micellar Water
As someone with dry skin, I tend to reach for a cleansing balm. Whereas someone with oily skin may prefer a cleansing oil or micellar water instead. I will do a roundup of my favorites below, but there are honestly so many good ones, so you have options. I suggest looking for cleansers with nourishing ingredients like ceramides, fatty acids, and antioxidants.
Step 2: Apply Said Cleansing Balm or Oil
Gently massage the cleanser onto dry skin. After I have massaged it all over, I will use a small amount of water to emulsify. Emulsification is the process where the balm or oil transforms into a milky consistency upon contact with water. This reaction helps lift away oil, dirt, and impurities more effectively, ensuring they rinse off easily without leaving residue. Once fully emulsified, I wash it off completely with lukewarm water.
Step 3: Choose Your Water-Based Cleanser
I did a whole blog on this, so I won’t get into too much detail, but I will do a roundup of my favorite cleansers for every skin type below:
Step 4: Apply Said Cleanser
Once the first cleanse has lifted residue, it’s time for a gentle water-based cleanser to remove anything remaining. This step leaves you a clean slate for your serums and treatments. If you are someone who likes specifics, I like to gently cleanse for about 60 seconds, before washing off and patting dry.
Pro Tip: When you're patting your skin dry, if residue is coming off on the towel, that’s your sign you didn’t cleanse thoroughly enough!
2nd Pro Tip: Don’t want to buy a separate cleanser for your first step? No problem! Just use your water based cleanser twice! It may not be QUITE as effective but I have been known to do this in a pinch or on a particularly lazy night and if you thoroughly lather and cleanse each time, it gets the job done!
