Reverse Skin Damage

I get it, there’s something so tempting about laying out in the sun for hours on end and getting the perfect tan. I used to be a sun bum myself. But, exposure to the sun is incredibly detrimental to the health of our skin. There have been a number of studies that have proved up to 80% of visible signs of aging (such as fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin tone) are due to too much exposure to the sun. Although we cannot completely reverse sun damage, there are several things we can do to help counter some of the damage.

Tip #1

If you know me, you already know what I am about to say: SUNSCREEN. If you are not using sunscreen every single day, there’s no point in using any other skin product. With that, if you can, I specifically recommend a tinted sunscreen. The iron oxides within tinted sunscreen can be so beneficial for those fighting hyperpigmentation. One of my all time favorite tinted sunscreens is my Elta MD Tinted SPF

Tip #2

I love incorporating a good chemical exfoliant into my routine. It’s a perfect step for gently exfoliating the skin that improves the appearance of skin texture and uneven skin tone. After using these, you’ll notice an immediate radiance to the skin. As an added bonus, ingredients like glycolic acid can increase collagen production. One of my must-have chemical exfoliants is Dr. Dennis Gross’ Alpha Beta Peel Pads.

Tip #3

Retinoids are an absolute dream for skin damage.  Retinoid is a term that covers both over-the-counter retinol and prescription-strength retinoic acid. A retinoid product will help promote cell-turnover and prevent clogging of pores. It is one of my favorite steps for improving fine lines, discoloration, skin texture, and increasing collagen production. Two of my favorite retinoids for beginners are the Biossance Squalane + Retinol Night Serum and Kiehl’s Retinol Fast Release Wrinkle Reducing Night Serum.

Tip #4

The days of relying on laying out in the sun for a glow are over! There are so many incredible self tanners and tanning drops now, there is really no need for laying out or tanning beds. Just don’t do it! I love adding a few of these drops to my facial moisturizer and a few drops of these to my body lotion. You’ll get the glow without the damage!

I hope these tips help you in your journey of reversing skin damage! For more skin care tips & tricks, make sure to follow me on Tik Tok, PINTEREST & Instagram.
