Best Tips For Reapplying Sunscreen Over Makeup

If you know me, you know how much I swear by SPF. Without a doubt, the number one product you should wear every single day is SPF! Whether you spend your day inside, outside, or a hybrid of both, SPF should be applied as the last step in your AM routine. With that, I suggest reapplying your SPF every 2 hours (especially if you are outside)! So your questions might be, HOW should you reapply your SPF on top of makeup? Here are my top 3 suggestions for reapplication in order of preference.

  1. Reapplying your regular sunscreen lotion is going to be the best option for adequate application. If you’re not wearing makeup, great, slather it on. If you are, you can gently rub the product together in your hands and pat on the skin or use a damp beauty blender. This does help minimize makeup disrutpion but the reality is there will be some. But let’s think of things in perspecitive here: why do we wear foundation? So our skin has a more even appearnce? What actually GIVES our skin a more even appearance? Properly protecting from UV. When you look at your long term goals, it’s easy to trade perfect makeup for protected skin. For products, I’ll usually reapply with the same sunscreen I used UNDER my makeup. 2.  SPF sticks over makeup is the second best form of SPF coverage IMO! You’ll want to apply multiple passes over the entire face to get as close to ample coverage as possible. One of my must-haves for leaving a dewy finish and not disrupting my makeup (as much) is the SUPERGOOP! Glow Stick. The Shiseido Clear Sunscreen Stick is another favorite of mine. The finish is a little more matte and removes a little makeup, but doesn’t leave the skin as dewy which some people don’t like!

  3. SPF powder is my least realiable option but I do use it when I’m in a pinch. The pro to them is they won’t really disrupt the makeup at all. On the other hand, the SPF coverage isn’t nearly as strong or reliable. I mainly use them when I want to mattify throughout the day but still get the additional benefit of a bit more SPF, not relying on this for application before I’ll be going outside for an extended period. My personal favorite is the Ciele Filter & Protect SPF 30+ Finishing & Setting Powder because I can apply a bit more that is possible with brush dispensers and I just love this formulation.
