My Step-By-Step Dyson Tutorial

Arguably one of my favorite compliments ever is when I go to the hair salon and the stylist comments on how I achieved such healthy and strong hair. While they stand by all the hair care steps I tell them I take, it’s the Dyson tools that they credit my hair health to the most! Despite the fact that I absolutely swear by the Dyson hair tools, there can be a learning curve on how to use them. Due to this, I am going to give you a step-by-step routine of exactly how I style my hair with my Dyson Airwrap.

I want to start by saying if you have tried the Airwrap and just don’t understand the hype, I get it. Full disclosure, the first time I bought it, I actually returned it. My expectation was to achieve these tight (almost ringlet) curls and the truth of the matter is, the airwrap is not really meant to be used for that style. After I returned it, I got a better understanding of how to use it, and, most importantly, managed my expectations of what the end result would look like. So I gave it another go and can honestly say, I am never going back!

Benefits To The Dyson Airwrap:

There’s no denying the fact that the Dyson is absolutely an investment. With that, for me, the number of benefits it has back it, makes it completely worth it! Unlike traditional hair dryers that lead to heat damage (even with the use of heat protectants), the Dyson uses advanced air multiplier technology to control heat distribution, significantly reducing the risk of damaging your hair. This basically means one can achieve a quick dry without the high heat that causes hair to become brittle and split. The controlled styling temperature helps to preserve the hair’s natural shine and integrity.

What’s the craziest part to me is that research shows that using the right tools can make a big difference in maintaining hair health, even compared to air drying. Contrary to what most of us once thought (including myself), air drying can cause hair to swell and strain the cuticle. So all of this being said, the Dyson’s ability to regulate heat not only protects against this but also ensures that hair dries efficiently and safely.

My Step-by-Step Dyson Hair Routine

Step 1: Color Wow

Heat protectant first always! I apply Color Wow Heat Protectant throughout my damp hair. I love that this product acts as a shield from heat, but also smooths frizz and enhances shine. 

Step 2: Rough Dry

Next, I use my Dyson to rough dry my hair to about 80% dryness. The fast drying time, coupled with the lower heat settings, minimizes heat damage significantly. 

Step 3: Round Brush to Smooth

After rough drying, I pin up the top section of my hair to focus on the lower layers first. I then attach the round brush to my Dyson Airwrap. Using this tool, I take medium sections and gently curl them under. This technique not only smooths out any crimps but also provides a subtle lift at the roots, giving me just a little more volume and lift.

Step 4: Curl Attachment

It’s time to add the curl attachment and style! I start with my hair sectioned and damp. I take the first section of hair and hold it about 10cm from the end. I then slowly bring the hair towards the barrel until it attaches itself. Reminder, you don't need to twist it! The hair wraps around the barrel automatically.

I hold each section in place for about 15 seconds. For the front pieces, I switch the direction of the curls by rotating the cool tip to curl away from my face, while the rest of my hair curls towards my face. Once my bottom layer is complete, I move to the top layer and repeat until I am fully curled! Pro Tip: Pay attention to the arrows on the barrels. They should face away from you when you look in the mirror. This ensures that the curls will wrap correctly around the barrel without tangling. I, personally, like to have my hair curl towards the face, except the front pieces curl away. 

Step 5: Finishing Spray

To finalize the styling, I spritz Amika Volume Finishing Spray all over, just to keep everything voluminous and in place! & Voilà!
