The 4 Best Dry Shampoos (& Why I Love Them)

As someone who feels incredibly passionate about hair care and only using products that support the health of my scalp/hair, dry shampoo is a favorite subject of mine. While I am sure most of you are familiar with dry shampoo (it’s pretty much a life saver for most of us), I wanted to use this blog to give you information on some of my favorite  dry shampoos to date!

For starters, for anybody who might be starting their dry shampoo exploration, it is one of my favorite products to keep hair looking fresh and voluminous. By absorbing excess oil, it instantly refreshes hair, giving it body and texture without the need for water. You’ve probably heard that it’s not ideal for your hair/scalp to wash your hair daily, and while only you know the best wash frequency for you, dry shampoo can help you extend those washes. So what should you be looking for when it comes to a good dry shampoo?

What Makes a Great Dry Shampoo?

A great dry shampoo should do three things well: cleanse without residue, volumize and texturize without weighing hair down, and ideally, nourish the hair and scalp. I look for products that leave no white cast, feel lightweight, and offer some form of scalp care benefit, such as moisture or soothing properties. Fragrance is also a key factor for me—it should be pleasant but not overpowering.

My 5 Favorite Dry Shampoos

1. Crown Affair Dry Shampoo - $42.00

Why I Love It: This product stands out because of its gentle formula and application method. The kabuki brush allows for precise application, which is perfect for targeting specific areas that need refreshing (this is personally my favorite application method). If you watched my episode with Crown Affair’s Dianna Cohen, you know she prioritizes integrity when it comes to the ingredients within her products. I find that the formula is particularly kind to sensitive scalps and doesn't leave any gritty texture.

2. Arey Wait A Sec Dry Shampoo - $36.00 (use code “SKINTHUSIAST20” for 20% off)

Why I Love It: I should start this off by saying the entire ethos behind the Arey Grey brand is slowing down and reversing the process of grey hair (you can hear more about this on my podcast with the two founders). With this being said, what truly sets their dry shampoo apart is its peptide content, which supports hair health and even claims to slow the graying process. The powder formula is also just a dream for adding volume and comes with a hint of tint that blends seamlessly with my hair color (avoiding white cast). Added Bonus: it has just the most refreshing cedar & sage scent.

3. Living Proof Dry Shampoo - $43.00

Why I Love It: To no exaggeration, this formula is a literal powerhouse when it comes to actually cleaning hair. It absorbs oil and sweat while eliminating odor (trust me, your hair will feel SO refreshed after using). I can’t even count how many bottles I have gone through of it, but it is easily one of my must-haves. It also adds a noticeable amount of body and texture, which helps extend the life of my waves. This is my favorite aerosol formulation.

4. Briogeo Dry Shampoo - $25.00

Why I Love It: This one is the most affordable of my dry shampoo favorites, but the quality is truly just as good as all of the others! Briogeo has taken a unique approach by infusing their dry shampoo with charcoal, which “detoxifies” and balances scalps (& you know I am a sucker for scalp care). It’s aerosol-free, making it environmentally friendly and easy to control where I apply it, especially with the unique packaging. The formula is especially great for sensitive scalps and helps to keep my hair feeling fresh and clean longer without any added weight.

I hope this helps you in your next dry shampoo hunt! If you give any of them a try, please let me know what you think! ALSO! I am putting together a Haircare Guide that I am beyond excited about.
