My 5 Favorite Products With Ceramides

It’s highly likely that you’ve heard the topics of ceramides pop up in the skincare world lately. And for good reason! Ceramides naturally make up about half of the skin’s lipid barrier, helping to lock in moisture and protect against environmental damage. But as we age, our skin produces fewer ceramides, which can lead to dryness, irritation, and, ultimately, a compromised skin barrier. Fortunately, we have the ability to add ceramides into your skincare routine! Keep reading for the 5 ceramide products I love the most!

What Are Ceramides & Why You Need Them In Your Skincare Routine?

Before we get into products rich in ceramides, let’s go over some of the basics (& why you should be actively looking for ceramides as a skincare ingredient). Ceramides are a type of lipid (or fat) that acts as the glue in your skin barrier, holding your skin cells together. If we use the metaphor of a brick wall with cement filling all the gaps—without the mortar, the wall weakens, leaving gaps for moisture to escape and irritants to get in. Similarly, ceramides keep your skin barrier intact, which helps lock in moisture and protect your skin from environmental damage.

Benefits of Ceramides for the Skin:

  • Restores the skin barrier.

  • Locks in moisture.

  • Protects from external aggressors, basically shielding your skin from pollution, bacteria, and irritants.

  • Reduces signs of aging.

  • Ceramides reduce redness and swelling.

How to Use Ceramides in Your Skincare Routine

Fortunately, incorporating ceramides into your routine has become so much more accessible. Most often, you’ll find them in moisturizers, but they also appear in cleansers, and serums.

ADDED BONUS: I feel like people don’t talk enough about how ingredients combine with others (you can read my blog on skin combos I love & don’t love, for the full rant). BUT! I did want to highlight that ceramides combine well with almost all ingredients!

Now that we have covered why we should be using (& loving) products with ceramides, let’s go over the 5 products I am loving!

  • Shani Darden Retinol Reform: Yes, I will always include a retinoid if I can, especially when retinol formulas are barrier-conscious. This one contains retinol for collagen stimulation, but also includes Ceramide NP and niacinamide to help support the skin barrier while you’re using an active. It’s an elegant formula for patients who want results but are nervous about irritation.

If you try any of these, let me know what you think! I have a feeling you will love them. Also, if you have any specific blog requests, I would love to hear them. DM me any questions !
