Combating Blackheads
Let's face it, we all hate blackheads. They are stubborn, frustrating, and can be a real confidence killer. But if you're experiencing these pesky blemishes, there's no need to stress! I'm here to share my top tips and recommend the best products that will help you bid farewell to blemishes for good.
Before we discuss how to get rid of them, let’s discuss what blackheads actually are and how we get them. Blackheads occur when hair follicles become clogged with a mix of oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. They typically appear black when the “clog” is exposed to the air, causing oxidation (hence their name “blackheads”).
So how do you address them in your at-home skincare regimen?
Salicylic Acid (BHA):
One of my top recommendations for anyone dealing with blackheads is to introduce salicylic acid into your skincare routine, also known as BHA or beta-hydroxy acid. Its remarkable ability to penetrate deep into your pores and dissolve dirt and oil is unparalleled. If you have oily skin, consider yourself lucky because it tends to respond really well to salicylic acid. Two of my favorite Salicylic Acid products are Paula's Choice BHA 2% Exfoliant or the Naturium BHA Liquid Exfoliant 2%. However, for my friends with dry skin, salicylic acid can be a tad harsh and drying. You can opt for a different product or choose a wash-off option like the Cerave Renewing SA Cleanser or the Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Cleanser, apply it specifically to the areas where blackheads tend to lurk, let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse off. This is a form of short contact therapy and can reduce the risk of irritation!
Retinoids:
If you've been following my skincare advice, you know that a reliable retinoid is one of my must-have products. These Vitamin A derivatives are notorious for increasing cell turnover, preventing clogged pores, and reducing inflammation. They're truly the gold standard for not only tackling acne but also getting rid of blackheads (to know more about why I love retinoids and how to use them, make sure to read my Retinoids 101 blog). To supercharge your results, consider adding retinoids like La Roche-Posay Effaclar Adapalene to your nightly skincare routine. For those who hare really going through it, it may be time to ask your Dermatology provider for a prescription retinoid. If you don’t have a Dermatology provider currently, I recently tested out Apostrophe for an upcoming partnership on IG and they gave me a non-affiliate code to share that makes your consult only $5! Use code AMYKOBELRING ! Try your best to be patient, it might take up to 8 weeks to see noticeable improvements.
Double Cleansing:
Lastly, but equally vital, is properly cleansing. Even as a Dermatology PA, I'll be the first to admit it's easy to assume you've cleansed thoroughly when you haven't. Double cleansing is a must to cleanse skin as thoroughly as possible (especially if you are wearing SPF and/or makeup)! Start with an oil-based cleanser or balm to remove makeup and sunscreen, then follow up with a gentle, water-based cleanser to eliminate any remaining impurities.
