How To Get Glowing Skin This Summer

Getting complimented on my skin or my “glow” honestly lights me up more than any other compliment! I work hard to take care of my skin. Sfter experiencing acne and acne marks in my mid-twenties, I am so grateful to finally have a glowing complexion. Thank you EltaMD for sponsoring this blog post!

Unfortunately, what I see too often is people chasing this “glow” by getting a tan in the warmer months. This may give you a couple of days of a smoother-looking complexion. However, did you know that a tan (just like a sunburn) is a sign of DNA damage in the skin?

When our skin cells are subjected to “insult” such as UV radiation from the sun, they deploy their pigmented cells to protect the cells’ important components. It’s literally our skin’s way of saying: wait! This is dangerous and I need to protect myself from it. What does all of this commotion lead to? Wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, loss of collagen, sagging skin and, worse, skin cancer.

So, how can you achieve a beautiful, healthy complexion that won’t give way too speckled, wrinkled skin? 4 Steps to Protect, Prevent and Repair UV Damage

Here are my 3 top tips to get that glowing skin this summer!

  1. Moisturize. This seems simple but just finding the right moisturizer for your skin type works wonders in plumping up those fine lines and wrinkles. You can also find great sunscreens with moisturizing properties (more on this below).

  2. Use a retinoid. Retinoids are Vitamin A derivatives that increase cellular turnover. They help to prevent AND improve fine lines, hyperpigmentation, blemishes, uneven skin tone and texture. They also aid in collagen production.

  3. Use sunscreen every single day. Rain or shine. Inside or outside. The right sunscreen is grossly underestimated. It can make ALL the difference. In fact, when my skin is complimented it never fails that I have on my favorited tinted SPF. Sunscreens have all sorts of amazing attributes these days. Not only do they protect our skin from damage that leads to signs of aging and skin cancer, they have moisturizing properties which help to reduce the appearance and depth of fine lines and some even contain corrective ingredients.

The EltaMD UV Glow Broad-Spectrum SPF 36 is a personal favorite of mine for a couple of reasons. Not only does it provide adequate daily SPF coverage, but star antioxidants like Niacinamide, Vitamin E and Ergothioneine work to brighten the skin and protect it against free radical damage. This is so important when it comes to fighting the effects of the daily UV exposure we are all subjected to even just walking to our cars! The Niacinamide also aids in reducing redness and refining the appearance of pores.

With hyaluronic acid and coconut fruit extract, this formula is incredibly hydrating and works to temporarily plump the skin. The Mica instantly brightens the skin and gives it a gorgeous luminosity- I really think this is where all the compliments come from!

The tinted EltaMD UV Glow is especially great for those with hyperpigmentation as the iron oxides provide an extra layer of protection from visible light which has been shown to make hyperpigmentation worse!

I think the before and after photos speak for themselves. The only difference here is the EltaMD UV Glow Broad Spectrum SPF 36 Tinted!

So, what’s my BEST tip for glowing skin? Use a sunscreen that is not only going to make your skin look hydrated and glowy IMMEDIATELY, but will also get to work on improving the overall quality of your skin in the process!
