Lip Care Essentials

When it comes to skincare, our lips often don't get the attention they deserve. But let's be real, there's no denying the confidence boost a healthy, luscious pout can give you. Whether you are going for a bold red lip, or going for au-naturale, our lips play a significant role in your overall look. So, these are my tips for keeping your lips hydrated and plump.

  1. Exfoliation

Ever hurriedly applied your lipstick before dashing out, only to realize your lips are dry, flaky, and your lipstick seems to magnify the issue? Don’t worry, we’ve all been there! Just like your skin, your lips need a little gentle exfoliation every now and then to slough off dead skin cells. You can use your favorite lip scrub (I love this one from Fresh), but you can also make your own! For a step-by-step on how to make a dreamy lip scrub, you can read my DIY Simple Lip Scrub blog

2. Lip Masks

If you know me, you know I cannot go to bed without some sort of mask or treatment on my lips. Applying a hydrating lip mask before bed, like the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask, is truly magical for achieving soft and plump lips by morning. But, this can truly be as simple as swiping on some vaseline! (BONUS: Apply the mask right after you exfoliated for the softest lips).

3. Lip Balms

Now I know that keeping a lip balm in your bag is probably obvious, but it’s even more important to choose the right lip balm. I know it can be tempting to go for spicy cinnamon or fruity flavors, but they can actually exacerbate dry, cracked lips, so choose wisely! When ditching your chapstick for an effective lip balm, look for ingredients like castor seed oil, ceramides, and shea butter. These contribute to nourishing and revitalizing your lips. Additionally, glycerin and petroleum jelly can provide excellent hydration for your lips.

4. Other Care Treatments

A few tips I recommend keeping in mind for your day-to-day are to resist the urge to lick your lips when they're dry – this seemingly harmless action can actually exacerbate the issue. Moreover, refrain from biting or picking at your lips; it's just adding salt to a wound. Finally, remember to stay adequately hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Maintaining hydration within your body directly reflects on the health of your lips – after all, chapped lips can be indicative of dryness.

5. SPF

To shield your lips from sun damage, opt for a lip balm featuring an SPF of 30 or higher. This preventive step prevents sunburn, preserving the condition and minimizing sun damage. (TOP TIP: Even during the winter months, safeguarding your lips from the sun's rays is still crucial. AKA wear your lip SPF year round).

6. Bonus Devices

If you are looking to really take your lip care to the next level, consider integrating Dr. Dennis Gross' LipWare Pro. This LED lip treatment device effectively targets the entire lip area, boosting collagen, smoothing fine lines and wrinkles, and promoting firmer skin. I have been trying to use mine daily (for the pre-set time of 3 minutes) to thwart aging lips. Yes our lips age, too and start to lose volume naturally. Red light can help give them the collagen boost they need.

7. Lip Liners, Glosses, & Lipsticks

Now that we have gone over the care techniques and products to keep your lips healthy and plump, it’s time for you to add a pop of color of your choosing. I am a little obsessed with the combo of Charlotte Tilbury’s Pillow Talk liner and YSL Rouge Volupté in Nude Lingerie
