3 Skin Truths I Wish I Knew Earlier

Get ready to uncover some valuable skin wisdom! Here are 3 rather enlightening skin truths that have transformed my own skincare routine and are something I counsel patients on regularly.

The Impact of Diet: Low Sugar and Low Glycemic Choices:

Let's talk about the relationship between diet and skin health. Previously thought to be a reach, more and more evidence is pointing to a solid link between what we eat and the health of our skin. It’s NOT the only, or even the most important factor but it CAN have an impact. One key revelation is that reducing sugar intake and following a low glycemic diet can make a significant impact on our skin's appearance. By opting for low sugar and low glycemic foods, we reduce the formation of Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs) that eat up our collagen and harm our skin barrier. This reduction in harmful substances can help us on our journey to alleviate acne and improve overall skin health. So, choose slow digesting whole grains, lower GI fresh fruits, and vegetables for a skin-friendly diet that supports a glowing complexion.

Whenever I’m tempted to reach for a sweet after dinner snack (...every single night) I will usually make a skin-healthy yogurt bowl instead! This provides my skin with healthy fats, antioxidants from the berries and its low GI! See the recipe here! Note: there is whole fat, pasture-raised Greek yogurt in this recipe. There is some data that low fat dairy can worsen acne so I prefer to stick to whole fat dairy if I am consuming it!

Stress and Skin: An Unfortunate Connection:

Stress can wreak havoc on our skin's condition, putting a damper on the party of healthy, vibrant skin. Chronic stress and heightened adrenaline levels can negatively affect our skin's appearance and exacerbate various skin issues that may already be present. Managing stress through relaxation techniques, exercise, and self-care rituals may be helpful for promoting healthier skin among other things! Chronic stress can actually lead to increased oil production and inflammation. So, take a deep breath, embrace self-care, and keep an eye on how your skin reacts!

Embrace Plant-Forward and Healthy Fats:

Nature provides us with amazing allies for glowing skin. Including plant-forward foods in your diet, along with healthy fats, can be helpful for achieving that coveted radiance. Feast on a rainbow of fruits and vegetables, rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. These powerhouse foods combat free radicals and therefore support a healthy complexion. Don't forget to incorporate healthy fats like avocados, nuts, and seeds, as they provide essential fatty acids that nourish your skin and maintain the skin’s barrier.

Understanding these three skin truths has been a game-changer for me, and I'm thrilled to share them with you. By choosing a low sugar, low glycemic diet, we reduce harmful glycation end products and improve our skin's barrier function, potentially minimizing acne. Managing stress allows us to maintain healthier oil production levels and promotes overall skin well-being. Embracing plant-forward foods and healthy fats provides the nourishment our skin needs to glow from within. Armed with this newfound knowledge, let's make conscious choices to support our skin's health and radiance. Remember, small changes can yield significant results. So, here's to healthier, more vibrant skin that truly reflects our inner beauty.
