How To Treat A Pimple Like A Derm PA

Today’s focus is on arguably the most common beauty woe: pimples. As a Dermatology PA, I'm here to spill the tea on how to treat those pesky blemishes like a pro. So, let's dive into the world of pimple treatment.

Keep Your Regimen Simple and Supportive:

First things first, keep your regimen simple and supportive. When it comes to treating a pimple that has already surfaced, simplicity is key. No need to go overboard with a dozen products. Instead, focus on a supportive routine that promotes healing and maintains your skin barrier. Start with a gentle cleanser that avoids overstripping your skin. Harsh cleansers can impair the skin barrier, making the situation worse. Remember the pimple is already here, so trying to prevent it with an acne cleanser won’t be very effective right now! Choose a gentle option that removes impurities without stripping away essential oils.

Follow up with a barrier repair moisturizer. This step replenishes the lipids in your skin and provides the support it needs to heal. Look for moisturizers with ingredients like ceramides, fatty acids, and niacinamide for the extra boost our skin barrier needs! When applying the moisturizer I tend to skip the area of the blemish so as not to impede the spot treatment which is coming up next!

Spot Treat Based on Pimple Type:

Not all pimples are created equal! Different types require different treatment approaches. Let's break it down: For inflammatory pimples, turn to our trusty friend benzoyl peroxide. This powerful ingredient helps fight the bacteria that causes acne and reduces inflammation. Apply a thin layer directly on the pimple to zap away those angry red bumps.

If you're dealing with comedonal acne, say hello to salicylic acid. This gentle exfoliant penetrates your pores and helps unclog them, reducing the formation of blackheads and whiteheads. Spot treat those pesky comedones with sal acid!

Prevention with Retinoids:

Now, let's talk prevention. Acne products like retinoids are superheroes in the fight against breakouts. But here's the twist: they're best used all over your face to prevent pimples from forming in the first place. Retinoids, such as tretinoin or adapalene, work wonders by increasing cell turnover, preventing clogged pores, and reducing inflammation, but they’re NOT effective spot treatments. They're like secret agents that keep your skin clear and smooth. So, apply them all over your face as directed to stay one step ahead of those pesky pimples.

Now go forth, conquer those pimples, and embrace that radiant, glowing skin! Make sure to watch my reel on tackling pimples, too if you’re more of a visual learner!
