Acne Tips I Wish Everyone Knew

Dealing with acne can be a frustrating and challenging journey. However, in my opinion, there are some crucial acne tips that everyone should know (including my younger self) to make this process a bit smoother. In this blog, we'll cover some essential insights that can help you tackle your blemishes effectively.

Purging Is Normal:

One of the most confusing aspects of starting a new acne treatment is experiencing what's known as "purging." This phenomenon is entirely normal and occurs in about 1 in 5 people with acne who begin a product that increases cellular turnover. This includes most commonly retinoids and chemical exfoliants. Purging may look like breakouts in your typical acne-prone areas and might even heal faster than regular pimples. Think of it as those upcoming pimples making an early appearance all at once. It's a sign that your skin is adjusting to the new product and pushing out impurities. If you are looking for a Derm PA’s favorite pimple treatments, make sure to take a peek at my recent blog.

The Benefit Of Over-the-Counter Treatments:

Over-the-counter treatments have come a long way in effectively managing breakouts. Products like Adapalene have earned their reputation for combating acne. These readily available options can work wonders for many. However, if you find that you're still breaking out after 8 weeks of consistent use, OR your acne is scarring it's wise to consult your dermatology provider asap. They might recommend additional treatments or adjustments to your current regimen to better address your specific needs.

Prevent Scarring:

Acne can sometimes leave behind scars, and the key to preventing them is early intervention. It's not worth waiting to see if over-the-counter treatments will work if you're dealing with severe, persistent acne or it’s leaving behind scars. Instead, schedule an appointment with your dermatology provider right away for tailored treatments and guidance to minimize scarring risk.
